New TV Season Has Started!
Entered on: September 23, 2008 1:27 PM by Ross

So what're the big shows this season that everyone is watching?  For new ones, I'm giving "Fringe" a try though it's not blowing my skirt up so far, and I'll watch Knight Rider a few more times but I think it's going to go the way of Bionic Stank.

However, Heroes last night looks like they took the fans' advice regarding the sluggish pace of last season to heart.  It was much better than before, but I have some major problems with the show in general.  Spoilers follow if you haven't seen it:

  • Time travel, as a rule, ruins a story.  They demonstrated right at the beginning that Hiro can move forward and backward in time at will, with ease.  Hence, any problem that arises (such as the Flash Chick stealing the secret KFC recipe) can be easily remedied: go back a few minutes in time and try something else.  I know he had some cheap cop out about not wanting to do that, but that's all it was: cheap.  Bad narrative structure.
  • Repeatedly, characters (Hiro included) had the upper hand on their adversaries, only to not follow through and finish the job and thereby get fucked.  Claire, for instance, at least twice could have killed Sylar if she'd just have tried to, instead of just trying to buy time in a futile attempt to escape.  Hiro could also have easily stopped Flash Girl in any number of ways when he freezes time.  Weak.

Entourage, on the other hand, continues to be off the hook sweet. Ari had me howling with laughter in the last episode as he walked around and randomly flipped off and fucked with his coworkers just because he was generally angry.  Something I aspire to be able to do someday...

My list of excitement (in television) for the season is as follows:

  1. Heroes
  2. Entourage
  3. The Office

(in no particular order)

I plan to watch Smallville regularly too but I wouldn't group that under excitement so far.  The first episode was so full of plot holes, much like the last half of the previous season.  Lex and Lana are apparently not going to be around this season.  They've hinted at Clark leaving behind farm life and moving on towards his destiny finally but we'll see how far that actually goes.

As for Heroes, I'm not sure what I think so far.  Many aspects of the show have started to ruin it for me I think.  Between Claire's blood being (apparently) able to bring anyone back from the dead, and multiple people possessing time travel abilities, it requires a lot of cop out explanations to tell why they can't solve any problem easily.

At least Entourage and the Office are good fun based in reality so I don't have to try and keep track of which laws of science apply to which show.

I've got to throw SVU onto the must watch list.  I love that show.

I was all hyped up about Heroes.  I think the problems with the plot are very similar to Lost.  They have to leave all these holes open so they have a place to bring the show if they run into a dead end.

Staying at the BOQ, I actually have TV for the first time in almost 2 yrs - and HBO to boot. Looks like Entourage is still as good as I remembered. I watched the 1st 2 seasons of Heroes and I liked it but missed last season so I'm not sure how to proceed. I saw Smallville a my general impression is it's gone stanky. In particular the Green Arrow looks ridiculous. Of course The Ultimate Fighter is a must see for those who still have manliness in their blood.

Nick Nick, don't forget DWTS on your list! I watch 3 shows: Entourage, The Office, and The Colbert Report! Jeremy Piven makes the show super sweet! I was laughing my ass off Sunday night!

Bone:

If you've seen the first 2 seasons of Heroes, you're only missing what aired last night. (the 1st two episodes of season 3)  I believe you can watch them on NBC's website, which I intend to do tonight, having missed the last 20 or so minutes of the second episode.  I'm not sure how long they leave the episodes up but if you get around to watching those you're caught up it sounds like.

I haven't watched the new HEROES yet (I think that's the plan tonight).  I'm looking forward to it, but I have the same problem with time travel (in this and other stories).  Bells and I have talked about it.  It just doesn't make any sense, and as you said Bert, if something doesn't go your way why not just got back a minute and do something differently?  Remember last season when Hiro went back in time, and left his friend waiting (and worrying) for his return?  Why leave him waiting at all?  Just return a second after you left.  That shit drives me crazy!

Then it's clearly ENTOURAGE and THE OFFICE all the way!  Always hilarious, and anyone not watching these are ignorant dufuses.

We've also been watching HBO's TRUE BLOOD.  It's weird, campy, silly, strange... and having fun watching so far.  KNIGHT RIDER, Bert?  Really?  I couldn't get past the "hit" TV movie they did last year -- way stankier than Bionic Woman!  (Yes, Rad, I'm getting to Earth 2 shortly...)

We're just finishing up HBO's GENERATION KILL which follows soldiers in Iraq (and produced by the guy behind THE WIRE, another show we got to get back to).  Good stuff!

DWTS?  WTF???

Entourage had me cracking up this week too.  Drama!  Of course Ari is my favorite too, he is awesome.  The other must watches for us are 'The Daily Show' and 'The Colbert Report', 'Mythbusters', 'American Chopper'.  We will also be tuning into 'The Office'.  What is the story with '30 Rock'?  Is that coming back?  I love that show too.

Another show I heard they will be doing in the US is 'Top Gear'.  Its a car show thats going on 13 seasons in the UK.  It is one of my all time favorite shows.  I don't think the US verison will be as big a hit as the UK one.  If you are in need of a show to DL and like cars, this is the one to watch.  They always are doing some crazy challenges - like driving to the North Pole against a dog-sled team... or racing a Nissan GTR against public transportation across Japan.  One of the classics is in the US.  They tried to cross Alabama without getting arrested, shot-at, or killed.  They got to paint each other's cars to facilitate getting arrested, shot, or killed.  They did run into some problems.  Here is a link to YouTube to show one of my favorite car reviews... the Ariel Atom

THE DAILY SHOW and COBERT REPORT are always funny... especially during election time!

Drama on ENTOURAGE always cracks me up.  He's always got that sad sack expression of his... and his temper!

I didn't mention Mythbusters, partly because it's not a story-based show, and its season is off from most others, but also because it's such a consistently good show that it makes other shows pale in comparison, quality wise.  Even though they have a bit too much of a penchant for destruction, I still think it's my favorite show on television.

From: NickNick Entered on: September 23, 2008 6:01 PM

I think the only show that can rival Mythbusters, in my lifetime, would be Mr. Wizard.  Mythbusters is the pimped out grown up version of that show.

I think the other Discovery show that I truly enjoy is Dirty Jobs.  Mainly because of Mike Rowe's humor.

From: Ross Entered on: September 23, 2008 6:23 PM

Oh, I also forgot The Shield.  That show just keeps getting better, and this season (sixth, I think) is its last.  The only thing that sucks about it is that it's not in HD.  But wow, that is the best drama on TV, bar none.

And yeah, that guy on Dirty Jobs cracks me up.  I've only seen a couple of episodes, but they did one where he was working in some type of chicken hatchery (my grandfather's business) and they were literally squeezing the baby chickens to make them shit.  He stops for a second and goes, "We're just squeezing the crap out of a bunch of chicks" and his off-the-cuff delivery almost made me spit out my drink.

I think this comic sums up why I respect Mythbusters so much.  I often find myself yelling at the TV things like "you can't bust that with only 3 tests!" but as the comic points out, they are really teaching the mass audience the value of testing things to verify if they're true, which is the fundamental idea of science, and something that all too many people fundamentally do not understand.

From: NickNick Entered on: September 23, 2008 6:42 PM

Ross, you bastard,  You've got me hooked to this crappy, no talent hack of webcomic.

It's genius I tell you.  I can't explain it, but I must read what happens to these stick people every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

And every once in a while, I actually understand one.

From: Bunky Entered on: September 23, 2008 7:52 PM

Thanks Ross! Atleast now we will get comics instead of Fugly pics.

Nick Nick, don't even pretend you don't watch Dancing with the Stars each week.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NICKNICK MOTHERFUCKER!

Sweet, DWTS is on TV on your b-day!

I hope you had a good B-Day. Jack, you violated JA protocol, it is supposed to be a new post. Prepare for a harumphing from Fatty!

Hey Rad, my TV listing must be wrong, because I haven't been able to find the Bionic Woman season premire.

From: NickNick Entered on: September 23, 2008 11:25 PM

Dancing with the Stars can bite my sack.  While I will admit it does hold entertainment value for some, "Reality Shows" have no place on my TV.  No Big Brother, No American Idol, No Surviver, no DWTS and so on and so forth.

Fugly pics have their place.  As do strategically placed comics.  The only reason you don't approve of my pics is that they don't include a Bone Soft-Core-Porn Trunk Shot.

32.  Besides Rad, I do believe that I'm the youngest sumabitch on this site.

32.... but those are in Bitch years, so you are really like 64.  HAHAHAHAH!  Happy Birfday NN.

From: Radmobile Entered on: September 24, 2008 6:38 AM

Yeah Bunky, I haven't been able to find Bionic Woman listed either.  The listings I've checked show Earth 2 being on sometime this week.  The Series Premiere!  Hopefully someone on this site can catch it and let us know how it is.  Perhaps the first 2 episodes will air together like Heroes.

HA HA HA HA HA!

Rad, I switched my cable network from Brighthouse to the new ATT U-Verse this week. While I could find the NFL channel, and virtually every sports channel known to man, no Bionic Women. Even when you search by name. I will have to do the Earth 2 check and get back to you.

Hey Creeko, what is the status with the the Bionic Byotch in Spain? Is it still on the air?

Nick Nick, Fugly does have it's place. On it's OWN website!

I'll take a box of the glory hole wipers, please.

Glory Hole Wipers??? Classic!!

The way I live my life, I probably am closer to 64 than 32.

I did some research and found out the following:

El estreno del espectacular episodio piloto de La mujer biónica registró en la NBC norteamericana nada menos que 13,5 millones de espectadores. Sin embargo, la huelga de guionistas en Hollywood provocó que la serie cerrara su temporada con 8 episodios.

So I guess that should answer your question

From: Ross Entered on: September 24, 2008 6:15 PM

Yeah, there's a bug when you type very little, it doesn't align your head all the way over to the left.  It's been there for a while, actually, but I think IE rendered it better than Firefox.  I've never taken the time to identify the exact problem and fix it.

From: NickNick Entered on: September 25, 2008 7:57 AM

Wow.  That rolling Rad head, for some reason, is incredibly disturbing.  I'm going to curl up in a fetal position for while now.

No Jack. However, if it was the Rad-Gnome and he was doing cartwheels...

Hey Robot, Zilla would love it if you could throw some animation on his Prince/Peanut Butter/F'd in the A photo!

From: Jackzilla Entered on: September 26, 2008 5:22 PM

I watched the first 2 hours of HEROES' new season.  Meh.

The show bothers me in a few areas:

1) the time travel stuff as mentioned before (makes no logical sense, and is too powerful of a power.  I think the ability to just slow time would have been sufficient for Hiro.  Time travel and teleportation?  He's a God.  Boring.)

2) I really don't sympathise with any of these characters (unlike the much better show LOST in my opinion, who has characters I care about)

3) the chearleader is reminding me more and more of Smallville's Lana with her winey ass (you got sweet powers, get over it!)

4) The narrated monologues by Suresh (usually at the beginning or end of episodes) drive me the fuck bat shit crazy.  It's just a bunch of pretentious mumbo jumbo that says... NOTHING!

That said, I'll keep watching for now.  Maybe it'll surprise me with my expectations so low.

From: Ross Entered on: September 26, 2008 6:01 PM

Well said, Jack. I totally agree, with the minor exception of the fact that I find the cheerleader so cute that I can tolerate her no matter what she says or does.  But Suresh has bugged me since day one, he talks nothing like a scientist.  He's always spouting some Deepak Chopra-esque crap that incorporates scientific words, but has no real content.  He's sort of central to the show, but damn, I wish Sylar would have just killed him.

It's kind of like they have a bunch of characters, some great (Sylar, Peter (arguably), Hiro (in spite of his flaws), Claire's Dad), some blah (Parkman, Nathan Petrelli, Nikki and her kid Micah), and some crappy (the Mendez siblings, especially), so they could come up with a good narrative, but they just don't know what to do at this point - they're already introduced, origins explored, and what - you're going to have the same people building toward a showdown over and over, season after season?  Poop!

From: Ross Entered on: September 26, 2008 6:09 PM

One other thing: I'm still watching Smallville, mostly because Bells said that they have a new creative team in this season and I'm going to see what they can do.  IMO they should have ended the show last season.  But they claim to have scrapped the "no flights no tights" rule and are going whole-hog on the Justice League thing.  Could be cool, probably won't be though.  The show definitely jumped the shark, and I really think it was around the time that Bo Duke bought the family farm.

From: The Bone Entered on: September 27, 2008 1:00 PM

I'm with you Bert on the cheerleader. As my good friend Diamond Dave says, "I'd eat the corn and the peanuts out of her shit"

Has any of you heard?

No?

You have not heard the word?

Hmmmmmm....  Maybe you should see the latest Family Guy.  Oh Shit... I was laughing!

From: Radmobile Entered on: October 7, 2008 1:43 PM

My co-worker had it playing at lunch today.  It was pretty funny.  I particularly like the bit about something being more uncomfortable than the time company came over early and Peter didn't have time to take a crap first.  It's funny because it's true.

And of course, the bird is the word.  I have in fact heard.
