This sounds very good. I had high hopes for this one, and it sounds like they won't fuck it up. I was disappointed to hear the the massively multiplayer Star Wars Galaxies game (PC only) hasn't been getting great reviews and had a pretty poor launch. I had been wanting to play it for many years, full well knowing that my life would end if it turned out to be good, as I'd never leave the computer. So with all the house shit going on right now, I can't afford to even try it. But this one being for Xbox means it's far less likely to be addictive and overly time consuming. Can't wait!

I thought Obi-wan was pretty fun although I would not go as far as to say it was great. I've played The Clone Wars and that game is sweeter than Obi-Wan. I think the Clone Wars is a fairly good game with some sweet plot devising going on. Hopefully Knights of the old Republic will be as cool as their saying.

Obi Wan was mediocre. The best Star Wars game ever was Tie Fighter, where you fly as imperials against the rebels.

'Knights' rated a 9.1 (SUPERB) from Gamespot. That's the highest review I've seen on there in a long time. It should be noted that they gave Brute Force a 7.6 (a game I think is pretty sweet) and Panzer Dragoon ORTA a 9.0 (a game none of us have liked at all).     I've never been able to get much into RPG games myself. I played Morrowind, and I liked it. I have played numerous RPGs in the past, and while I do find some of them fun, they do involve more time than I am usually willing to invest at this point. But for Star Wars, I can probably make an exception.     You also have to realize that the reviews are essentially genre-based. Panzer Dragoon Oorta is "rail shooter," and they gave it a 9.0 based on that. Same with this game, it's a 9.1 for an RPG. You have to use at least that amount of objective criteria to break it down - saying a game is a flat-out 9/10 isn't as useful as couching it within a set of games comparable in style and tone.

Yeah, all this jibba-jabba is fine and dandy, but the question is, does anyone have Knights yet, and when can I get a copy? Get to work, fools! I just did some reading on it, and it made me jizz my boxer briefs. I'm normally not a fan of RPGs - not enough immediate gratification - but this looks like a definite exception.

What the hell -- I'll give it a shot. I'll probably just rent it though because its so much faster; Will found it at Family Video but its rented out til Saturday. Its getting so much hype that I at least have to check it out. I doubt that I will set aside the resources required to play it though. THERE'S TOO MANY GAMES! I really want to finish Indy too (maybe I'll play it more Sunday).     In the meantime, Saturday is gaming again. I'm gonna have 4 boxes set up. I want to try Midtown Madness 3 with 4 people -- I think it'll be a blast! Then of course it'll turn into a Halo-fest by the end of the night.     Swerb has been invited but I haven't heard from him yet. Speaking of whom: Swerb - I heard you went to Ball's in Lowell for Pork BBQ sandwiches... but you didn't get Wacky Eyes (tm)!?!?! They're only 5 cents you cheap bastard!

Yes, Jack places the Wacky Eyes (tm) on the pork sandwich. He then pretends the sandwich is alive and has a conversation with it. He makes the sandwich talk back of course. It is quite bizarre and unsettling. It always ends with Jack getting mad at the sandwich and him devouring it in a carnivorous rage. Jack will then walk away muttering obscenities about the stupid sandwich and cleaning the BBQ sauce from his hair.     I think it is the Wacky Eyes (tm) that does this to him.

We got KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC this past weekend. I haven't had much chance to check it out. I created a character and started the game, but didn't feel like doing so much reading... and went back to Indy Jones. I'm gonna have to beat that game first. I got past the octopus yesterday... what a bitch that thing is!     Fatty played KNIGHTS for two hours but I'm not sure it hooked him. As I'm sure we've all heard, Fatty is the busiest man without a job around. He may not have the time to dedicate to this game.     By the way... BONE! When you come out here, are you bringing your box? We gotta get a HALO-FEST put together! I anxiously await running you over in a warthog.

Fatty would be typing in his review but he's over here playing KNIGHTS still. About 5 hours tonight (and counting). He won't do anything else. So I think he's hooked! It helps that he was able to make his character a hot chick.     Meanwhile, Ang & I progessed some more in Indy (she's hooked on Indy now too). This game is sweet fun. I'm in China and boy are those chinamen tough little bastards!

I played it last night as well, for a couple hours. I created my character, Drick Fardig, a scout... he's up to level 4 now I believe. The game is pretty fun! I'm not 100% hooked but I am still interested enough to keep playing. I told Roche that I forsaw that if anyone in the group would sit down and play it, it would likely be Fatty.

You should have asked Jack this weekend. At this point, he's your closest source. If I were you, I'd go to Best Buy and buy some DVD-R's (note: NOT DVD+R's) and have Jack cut you some games. I know Best Buy has been carrying less and less DVD-R's in favor of the + variety but you still should be able to score some.     Anyway, if you don't get one before the end of the month, I'll cut you one when I come back the weekend after next.

ZILLA GAMING UPDATE: Indy is sweet! I hope they do another! I think Ang & I are near the end. We got past the part where the tank is chasing you and you have to jump and whip past holes and craters... hard as shit! Angie was the one that finally persevered and got us past it. I love the hand-to-hand combat in this game. It's great fun! I particularly like being able to grab the enemy and toss them off of railings and shit. After Indy, I'm going back to Buffy and finishing up that game.

I don't think that's the end, but my memory for these things falters easily. Maybe you are. But yeah, I liked that game a lot too. But I agree with Roche: a lot of the appeal is the brand. Buffy is technically a better game from what I've seen (and the reviewers agree) but Buffy as a character is less interesting than Indiana Jones. And don't get me started on Lara Croft...

Indiana Jones is a sweet game and I had quite a bit of fun beating it. I liked Buffy as well but I agree with Bert, it was more fun to play as Indy.     As of last night I know that Zilla was on the second to the last level on Indy. Get your ass in gear and beat that game Zilla!!!

I just beat Indy this weekend. I rather enjoyed it. Granted the appeal of the game is its concept and leading character. Overall, I wouldn?t give it a very high score, but since I?m a big Indy fan it helped to keep me playing. I love the fighting too. I like that there?s not a generic fighting style throughout the game. The German thugs have a different fighting style from the Chinese and Turks.     I haven?t really given Buffy a chance, mostly because I despise the show. I am, however, curious to give it a try because of all the hype.     I'd also like to get my hands on KOTOR.     So many games, so little time

I BEAT INDY!!! The ending was kind of a let down though (Roche hyped it up... maybe just to encourage me to keep going). I think the tank chasing Indy level should have been the final challenge though -- It was the hardest. Overall, I thought the game was great! The puzzles were never too hard (that you had to cheat) and the fighting was kick ass! High marks from me!     Now it's back to Buffy. I'm real close to the end on this one. I might have to go back a level though as my health appears to be too low to continue. (By the way, I HATE that in games. If you progress to the next level, your health should be restored).     Vootie!!! (Fatty, please note the proper spelling)

Nice work, Jack. How many total games does that make it that you've managed to stick it out through for the xbox now? :)     KOTOR is getting better and better. In fact, last night it was so ridiculous that I found myself thinking that I didn't want to move into my new place if it meant cutting into my KOTOR-playing-time. That's how much I'm loving this game.

Somehow I thought it was more.     My problem with a lot of the games is that I only like the multiple-player modes. I've never touched Midtown Madness, all the fightin games, etc. in 1-player mode. But I've played them plenty with friends.

I have cheated mostly only in games where you have to fight a boss repeatedly to learn a trick, play flawlessly for minutes, and execute said trick multiple times. I find that to be annoying in the extreme and detracting from the overall fun of the game. So I often do bypass those portions of the game. However, I do not enable cheats for the majority of any game. I basically only enable cheats in lieu of putting the game on the shelf and never playing it again.     That said, I cheated slightly on Splinter Cell as well. One very small portion of the game was using infrared goggles to view numbers pressed on a keypad, over and over. So I looked those codes up online. But that was the only cheat I did in that (extremely difficult) game.     Games I have completed (from memory):     Enclave (no cheats - I cheated after I won though)   Halo (no cheats)   Hulk (cheats for 2 bosses)   Indiana Jones (no cheats)   Jedi Outcast (no cheats)   Jedi Starfighter (no cheats)   Spider-Man (no cheats)   Splinter Cell (minor cheats mentioned above)     Actually, now that I list them and look at my games list, there are a lot more games that I've played significant amounts of and given up on (Wolverine, Buffy, Matrix, Hitman 2, Medal of Honor, Two Towers, Red Faction 2, Serious Sam, Timesplitters). So maybe I should keep my mouth shut.     I almost won Medal of Honor: Frontline, but it bored the shit out of me and got hard and not fun, so I gave up. I should have cheated on that one but like I said, I don't really care anymore.

That seems to be a major problem with me as well. I get to a part of a game that's too difficult and just isn't fun anymore. Fatty and I have gotten VERY far on Medal of Honor (on PS2) but finally kinda stopped playing. It's no fun playing carefully for 30 minutes and then getting sniped dead and having to start over.     There were several games on PS2 that I completed. Perhaps paying $50 for a game, one at a time, makes you feel more obligated in putting in your time and finishing a game. On my xbox, when I get stuck in a part too long, I'm like... "FUCK IT! I'll play this instead!"     Ross -- Have you tried the latest xbox MAME? Called MAMEoX? I'm getting most all of the older roms to work now. I enjoy a lot of those older arcade games and have rediscovered some I had forgotten about. Paint Roller (aka Crush Roller) is one (kinda've a Pac-Manish game where you paint the floor instead of eating dots). Crazy Climber cracks my ass up too. I even got Berzerk and Gorf with the voices working! Fun stuff. It takes time going through the hundreds of ROMS I have and deleting non-working ones and replacing bad ones but it's worth it!

Ok. I finally sat down and played KOTOR a little last night. It is kinda fun. I've never really played an RPG before but had to try it (by the way, EB's GMR mag gave it a 10/10 and said it was better than FFX). I played it for just 1-1/2 hours (Fatty played for 6 hours last night!). Chaka N'aw is at Level 3 and already making a name for herself! I think I may play nice for awhile but then go all out evil when she becomes a full-fledged jedi!

Don't worry Zilla - the payoffs of the game only become apparent after several hours of play. But at the point I'm at - it's addiction city! I admit that it was a bit slow at first, but most games like this are. Give it a bit of time to prove itself - 50 million Elivs fans can't be wrong.

I talked to Fatty yesterday and apparently, he's stuck. He's at the end but he doesn't know what to do now. I'm 80%+ of the way through, I have one more planet to beat and then I'll be where Fatty is. Hopefully I can get there and prevail where Fatina has faltered. Then again, I could just look online for a walkthrough and say I figured it out by myself... :)

Fuck KOTOR! I'm playing ODDWORLD: MUNCH'S ODYSSEY and it's SWEET! I don't know how I missed out on this game for so long. Zany graphics, original gameplay (platform puzzle game... reminds me of the truly SUPERB and under-rated ICO on the PS2 in gameplay) and it has a truly demented sense of humor. I love having all these odd characters following my character around. Plus, I can make my guy fart to the laughing delight of his on-screen friends.

Ross - If by "could not handle" KOTOR you mean "bores the shit out of" you are correct, sir! No surprise I guess. My favorite parts of games are the "action" elements, of which KOTOR has none. I know Rochesaurus is behind me on this one: we'll take the hands-on fighting of Buffy or Indy over the "HIT A TO ATTACK" of KOTOR. I don't think KOTOR is a bad game, it's just not my style (and I think it's a bit over-rated -- why does everywhere have to look like hallways in this game?).

They don't all look like hallways. You just didn't play the game long enough to find out otherwise. No big deal - I was certain that you wouldn't much care for a game that was more story-driven than action driven. (For proof, look above in this thread: http://www.jackassery.com/viewcomments.jsp?id=77&ty pe=news#932 )     But I was hoping Roche would stick it out long enough to discover that the story is compelling, as it's easily the caliber of a well-done film (better than the current crop of Star Wars movies, at any rate). Anyway, I guess if you're too boxed-in to a certain style of play, even sweet games like KOTOR and Splinter Cell can't pull you away from comparatively lackluster titles like Buffy and Indy.     (which are good games, while KOTOR and SC are GREAT games)

I've just completed KOTOR! I figured out a work around on the place I was stuck. Had to go back a couple of saves and redo things. Must have been a glitch in the game. The ending was not too hard - pretty much a couple of puzzles within some fights. I won't give anything away. I was tempted to start up another game and go to the darkside. I hear it is a much shorter game.

You need to use the Jedi gauntlets you got from Dantooine from the Jedi Masters. Equip these and Malak is no problem.

Creeko - If you liked MGS2, I suggest Splinter Cell. SC is one of my favorite games for the xbox (along with Halo and KOTOR) but everyone calls it a rich man's MGS2. In fact, I might start playing it again after I beat KOTOR... though I want to start playing the new Buffy.... and now that I think about it, I never beat the FIRST Buffy.... too many games, man! And I'm not even going the Zilla-route and downloading games like Finding Nemo and Baby's First Stroller Adventure and whatever else I can find. :)

I've finally disciplined myself to play just one game until completion. Right now I'm almost finished with Splinter Cell which I highly recommend. Next up will be KOTOR.

Finally someone who sees the light! I fucking love Splinter Cell, man. It's probably even slightly better than KOTOR in my opinion, just as a matter of taste (even though I love Star Wars) - but don't let that dissuade you. KOTOR is still a game of champions.

I've always recognized the fact that Splinter Cell is super sweet. I always seem to let myself get sidetracked with other games and by the time I get back to it I've forgotten how to play. This is a game you have to stick to because of the steep learning curve.

I had that problem as well. I played the hell out of it then got sidetracked with Enter the Matrix, Indy, and Buffy. Then I didn't play anything for months. Starting Splinter back up was a little tough a first but after a 10 minutes I was back in the swing. Which reminds me, I should finish Matrix before starting KOTOR since I'm pretty far along in that as well.

I'm back to SC too. I've always thought the game was way too sweet. I'm on the oil rig and getting my ass shot off.     Dude - you would have known if you had the gauntlets or not. There is a big production about it - A movie with the Masters telling you you'll need these to defeat Malak. Thats how I knew to defeat him. I don't know how your game would have you miss that. Oh shit - In my game Dantooine was long distroyed by now. If it is still around - you might have to jet back on the Hawk!

Dantooine went the way of Alderaan, man. It's gone. I'm screwed. That's okay though, I read some walkthroughs online and they didn't mention the gauntlets either, so it must still be possible to beat him without them.

Okay, I finally found a way. Roche/Bone/Swerb/Creeko, don't read on unless you want a tactic spoiled for you...       I just ran like a mofo all around. I found that if I threw my lightsaber or used "destroy droid" on those captive Jedi, it would recharge my force powers. That, plus the stalling tactic of running like my ass was on fire kept my force points fairly well stocked. I kept healing myself whenever Malak would hit me with something, and then when I was far enough away, I'd throw my lightsaber at him. The nice thing about that power is that it hits 100% of the time, whereas when I tried to battle him one-on-one, I would connect only about 20% of the time. After about 4 exchanges of lightsaber throws followed by running/recharging, I wore him down and his jawless ass dropped dead.     Long Live Drick Fardig!

More KOTOR spoilers....       I didn't have the gauntlets either. I saw that Malak was using the captive Jedi for his power, so I ran and distroyed all the machines. I only had enough for a few throw-lightsaber throws, but I had used a few sticky gernades to keep him put. After, my force power ran out, I kept at him with the stickies then it took 5 thermal detonaders. Sounds like you had an easier time. Glad you did not have to go back to Dantooine ;)

I beat Splinter Cell a long time ago. Twice actually once on the PS2 and again on Xbox. You guys gotta catch up. I too try to play one game at a time. But I keep playing Tiger Woods Golf for a quick video game fix, I bet Tony would like it. Will and I played it a-lot when he was here in Spain. (by the way, anyone know where the save game files are stored so I can send Will his saved game data?)

KOTOR was not a bad game but the only real skill requiered to play is the ability to push the 'A' button to skip through the whole thing. I bet ya one of those bobbing chicken heads could make it through the game in less yime time.

You see, KOTOR is one of those games where you get out what you want. You could see it as a crappy, simple game, with no real skill needed to fight. If that is the case, you won't enjoy it. But, if you let yourself get into it - let yourself become a Jedi - then it becomes a lot more fun. Its the story that is cool with the game. Ross and I got into the story. We lost ourselves a bit. If I remember right, I was procrastinating writing my epic paper on economic comparisons between France and Spain. KOTOR was a much needed substitute. Shit maybe I am wrong about the paper, but it was a distraction from something!

I just started playing KOTOR 2 last night in fact. Seems like more of the same, which is to say "sweet!" But being that it's still early and I don't have a lightsaber yet (and I'm running around in my underwear), I'm not quite the badass I was in the first game. But I'm glad to be back - I even put Prince of Persia 2 on hold in favor of this one.

Don't get me wrong, Ross. I enjoyed playing KOTOR quite a bit, it has a cool story and allows you to make moral decisions and wield light-sabers and other cool crap. I was as dark as dark could get. I just came to the realization after playing countless hours that the story eventually reaches an end regardless of the amount of thought you put into it. If KOTOR II isn?t significantly different and sweeter from the first, I think it would be like déjà vu and it?s the type of game that would take up far to much of my precious gaming time with all the new and long awaited games coming out.

As far as dialogue is concerned, you can choose *almost* any path and still win, that's true (there are some cases like the court case where you could kill yourself though). Your choice of dialogue's main influence is in your dark/light side points which influence your force powers, thus making combat easier or more difficult. Furthermore, the main challenge in the game is combat and puzzle solving. So I think you're being a little misleading here.

It's a game that you can get out of it what you put into it. If you want to spend hours maximising your stats, playing pazaak or choosing between the light or dark side of the force, you can. or you can just mash the A button a million times and eventually get through the game.   The first one was SWEET, but I think the second edition is only for people who had Star Wars sheets on their bed when they were kids (or perhaps in Bert's case still dose):)

Obviously you *can't* just mash the A button and win. That was my point - and that's the part about you being misleading. Can you mash through dialogue - yes (almost), through combat and puzzles - no.     And some people actually LIKE the ability to influence the story based on their actions. Think about it.     And by the way, I did have Star Wars sheets as a kid, and if Heather would let me I still would. So there!
